2007-2008 Update (updated 2-22-08):

Greetings!  Exciting things are happening in the Freshman Academy.  Here is an update!

**Counselors will be visiting classrooms in early March to discuss 10th grade course selections. During these visits, Mr. Hawkins and Mrs. Gordon will have students update their' Four-Year Graduation Plans, discuss prerequistites and sequencing of courses, and hold mini-advising sessions at each student's desk regarding his/her individual course selections for next year. Please ask your child in a couple of weeks to see their four-year plan and to discuss with you our advice for next year. After we have met with them, your child will be receiving their registration materials for next year during homeroom on March 10. Students are expected to return the materials by March 18, with your signatures. Please e-mail your counselor after March 10 if you have any questions about this process or your child's specific needs.

**We are also in the process of creating accounts on the CFNC website for all 2nd semester Semantics students. We will have all students who were present on the day of the activity registered by March 11. CFNC is a great tool for college searches, career and financial aid planning, etc.

**Freshman Academy students will head to NC State University on March 12 (Teams Garner and Gardinier) or March 19 (Teams Mercer and Brosnan) to learn about current college admission standards, tour campus, and participate in a Q&A panel discussion with current college students. You should have already received the permission slip. If you have not, please ask your child. The $3 fee and signed permission slip are due by Friday February 29th. We must have it by then to accurately arrange transportation.

**There has been a rash of students with flu and flu-like viruses at Jordan over the last several weeks. The attendance issues due to illness has been extreme. Please encourage your children to wash their hands many times per day and to take their vitamins!

**Another epidemic sweeping the halls of Jordan High School is related to students following our dress code and rules of conduct. Please support our efforts by not allowing your student to wear hats or ball caps to school and discourage their use of hoodies. Headgear is not allowed inside the campus buildings. Also, students are not permitted to use or display cell phones, Ipods, or pagers. Students have been made aware of these policies from the beginning of the year and yet we still are seeing them in use during school hours on a daily basis. This necessitates staff intervention and often confiscation of the prohibited item and a discipline referral. These steps are unnecessary if the items are not on campus to begin with. Thank you for your support with these issues.

Please let us know how we can serve you and your child more effectively. As always, your Academy team is available to meet with you upon request to discuss your child's progress. Simply contact your child's counselor to get on our calendar.
